Blender Internal: how to get a linear ramp (as opposed to radial)

I’m just doing a test on plane. I’ve applied a color ramp to a material but I want a linear gradient, not a circular one. Can anyone help?

Add a “Blend” texture to your material, set the colors to “Ramp” and the blend progression to “Linear”. Adjust the color ramp to your needs and map the texture to the mesh like you would map any other texture (UV, generated, etc):

question though… my ramp is like half black… cant figure out how to get rid of all the black, even though there isn’t any black on my ramp.

Hard to say without seeing the file…
Do all colours in your ramp have an alpha of 1.0?
