Hey
I’m new to Blender (using v 2.49) and have problems getting it to work. I’m on Win 7 x64. I’ve installed python and pyffi from this site.
Upon starting Blender, its main window loads but then freezes and only shows the grey background. I can get icons and buttons to pop into view by hovering over the grey background with the mouse cursor. Is this is a common problem?

If you’re completely new, may I suggest you try version 2.63 instead? For one thing, the installer takes care of everything for you, including the python installation. For another, you’ll find more help on this and other forums since most people are using 2.63 at this point.
Thirdly, you’ll be able to take advantage of the newer features.

Oh, I assumed 2.49 was the newest, I downloaded it from the wiki page. Will try out 2.63, back in a sec.
