Blender newbie having issues with extrusion!

Ok, so Blender’s been working great for me so far (especially since I have pretty much zero experience), but I’m running into problems with extrusion. Whenever I extrude, I can only extrude along the normal…is this supposed to happen? If not, how can I change it? It’s really frustrating!

Thanks in advance guys

Extrusion does default to along the normal, however you can extrude in any direction you wish. For example, assume the normal points in the Z direction. If, after you start to extrude, you press the ‘Y’ key, you will extrude along the Y-direction. If instead you press Shift-X, you can extrude at any direction in the Y-Z plane, etc. Good luck.

[Hint: In general, pressing ‘X’, ‘Y’, or ‘Z’ means perform the operation in that direction. Pressing Shift-Y means perform the operation an all directions except Y, and so forth.]

And pressing X, Y, or Z again will give you a second axis as defined in the 3D View Header, by default it is the Local Axis (very useful). Pressing a third time cancels all restriction

A real quick way to cancel restriction is to press C.

Another way to do axis restriction is to MMB drag in the direction you want.

Blender is a beautiful thing, isn’t it?
