Blender on ibook G3

Hi I can’t seam to get blender to work on any ibook g3? I’ve tried both of my sisters laptops, nether work, thou it works fine on my G4 cube, and G4 Imac, is it just somethingwith G3’s? It always quit’s when it opens.

see if putting the display at 16 bit color works

(no idea where the setting is, I don’t own a mac, but for a friend of mine it worked)

I run the same versions of Blender on my 2001 iBook G3 500MHz and on a new 17" iMac G4 1.25GHz. There is no difference except in the speed of the two machines. Both are set at millions of colors.

How much RAM do you have? I have 576MB on the iBook. Also check to see how much space is on your hard drive, if you’re running out of space you might have problems.

I have used Blender 2.25, 2.28, 2.30, and 2.31 - all with no problems in Jaguar and Panther.

16 bit is 65 536 colors (thousands)
24 bit should be 16.77 something million colors
(32 bit is 4 billion something colors)

The Monitors pane in System Preferences (or the Monitors menu if on) offer three settings - 256, thousands and millions. Unless a game changes the setting I always run the displays at millions. I haven’t noticed any difference in Blender in either the thousands or millions display settings.

(32 bit is 4 billion something colors)

Well, actually …
1 bit “color”= BW
8 bit color= 256 colors (from a chosen pallete)
16 bits= 65 thousand color
24 bits= 16 million color (8 bits -256 steps - for each color channel R,G and B)
32 bits= 24 bits color (16 million) + 8 bits alpha channel for transparency
48 bits color= 16 bits (65k) colors for each channel - high-end apps (Maya, LightWave) can render in this format (TIFF supports it). Expensive scanners also can scan in this color depth. Very high-end video also supports this for great compositing effects work.

Um… are you running OSX? Some of the older iBooks shipped with OS9, which won’t work with blender (i think). I have a G3 ibook running 10.2 at work, I could try and install it there and see what happens.

Yes I’m on os x, why the heck would I be on os 9??? It sucks :stuck_out_tongue:

I can think of lots of reasons  , maybe you’re:
stranded on a deserted island, too cheap to upgrade, running a system with<64 megs of ram, afraid of jungle cats (jaguar, panther, etc.), waiting for v.XI, donating your copy of 10 to the needy, boycotting apple, onboard the international space station, overly attached to the rainbow colored logo, on you’re deathbed, lost in the Amazon, secretly using VirtualPC, fighting crime in the city, wandering through the sahara, or maybe you just don’t care.

But if none of the above apply to you, then- I don’t know, why the heck would you be on os9?

You have to admit though, mine was a valid comment. Sometimes the answer is too simple to be obvious.

I’ve tried Blender 2.31 on a G3 ibook and it barely opened the first time. Now it absolutely refuses to open and says it has unexpectedly terminated. I went to other versions. 2.28c is the next one that runs reasonably but its a good idea to maxamize the window asap as soon as the program starts opening. I believe Blender has a harder time opening on a G3 than actually running (so it seems). Maybe its just me.

…oh and it was OSX 10.2 Jaguar, 600mhz, 256 Ram, not sure how many colors

plz check the console for any error reports as well

i remember that i had simillar problems some time ago
and even ton did not know what to do.
