Blender Projects to Look Forward to in 2025

A stated goal of Eevee Next was 100% feature parity with Eevee Legacy. This has not been achieved, and it seems like development has dropped off to pretty much nothing since the official release.

This isn’t the place to complain about it, there are other threads if you’d like to learn more, I’d be happy to complain over there  Instead, I’ll reiterate a strong interest in the story tools. I used Storypencil to do some storyboarding a few months ago, and I was impressed by the overall idea, but it was extremely buggy. A stable functional set of story tools in Blender- I’m very excited

I remember a conversation that went this way before, but it was Blender Internal that had been dropped at a release to better enable the devs to build up Eevee. It took a bit, but the cries for BI died down.

I’m pretty stoked for the new stuff, but I cautiously keep at least three different versions so that I can keep working while I get used to things that are changing.

i had to go back to 4.1 because of different compositor results for an older project that needed new renders. i had no time to figure out what exactly caused this. but otherwise 4.3 is fine for me so far.

what i miss in the 2025 projects is texture painting improvements. i hope this is part of sculpting a bit?

They are looking at bringing some of the control for a square tip in texture paint as is already in sculpt, maybe perhaps we will see some other things once they dive in.

Yeah this list isn’t exclusive, it’s more about the core projects being worked on through the year but I’m sure Eevee is going to get more feature and performance improvements as well !

Whelp, it would be sufficient if there was still eevee legacy in 4.2 LTS and whole depiction of EEVEE next would be different. Like i predicted year ago.
And tbh i stopped paying attention as much to eevee after that decision.

Anyway, does clement have vacations or smth? Cause he didn’t committed anything publicly since December 14.

Yikes, I have to disagree on that one. Autodesk has left countless things in FAR worse shape than anything people are complaining about here. In fact I would consider that their definitive trademark! Start a feature and leave it in despicable condition. For a fix on something comparable to EEVEE next you’d be waiting years, maybe decades… or forever.

As an side note, I find EEVEE next very useful. I understood it’s target mission was to make previewing your scene closer to what you get in Cycles and it does that quite nicely with the addition of global illumination etc. it is closer. I like it a lot. It beats the crap out of anything I used from Autodesk. I’m sure it will keep improving as opposed to many Autodesk “features”.

He’s back committing now.

Yes, he was on vacation for 5 weeks starting around mid December. So, understandable lack of working on work stuff.

Same. Exactly the same.

I was on the 3dsMax internal beta for many years(and Maya for a while too)… and it’s also why I completely left 3dsMax to use Blender. Don’t even get me started on how Adesk operates behind closed doors.

PBR texture painting (Layered Texture Design) is still missing. Sad that it was put on hold. BF explained that they don’t have enough people to deliver this.

Indeed, they do the absolute minimum they can get away with (and sometimes less).

Problems with Softimage after they acquired it were never addressed.

Some major bugs I reported in Inventor and worked with the devs a fair bit are still there a decade later, I’m not kidding. And Inventor is really their best developed tool (overall not too bad). Autocad, Plant 3D, Navisworks etc. are truly horrific. Sacks of hammered shit comes to mind. And they’re all expensive and somehow became some sort of industry standard!

“Industry standard” does, by no means, indicate good. Often it’s the worst.

I never had the impression that Autodesk had any intention of addressing any problems with XSI to begin it. It was hardly more than an acquisition to eliminate competition with Maya.

Yeah, Autodesk simply eliminated XSI, which was one of the most ruthless actions in the field, i.m.h.o., leaving lots of XSI users extremely dissatisfied with Autodesk.

which itself was acquired, because it was competition to 3D Studio. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

No big surprise. Allegorithmic worked on Designer and Painter for many years with team of several dozen people (10-20?). Afaik currently only Omar and Habib is working on similar project (Compositor). I guess they can work on that after that since it somewhat similar to substance engine.

Well, yes, but don’t Max Maya and XSI belong to the yellow media and entertainment sector?

It does not look that huge though.

None of this conversation is about upcoming Blender projects in 2025…

Well, studio is going to make a step back into game development. As a result technical aspect is expected to be enhanced, since pure compositional work they’ve been doing for the past decade was quite technically forgiving.

Static geometry only though, which actually makes this less ambitious than Yo Frankie! back in 2008, and that was with the BGE which was in pretty bad shape shortly before the project began.

Those shots though at least gave me some relief as I was fearing a Ketchapp style microgame similar to the ones that are often spammed onto mobile storefronts, yes, that is sadly the actual state of trust I have with the open projects in terms of their ability to push Blender forward.

You complain about Blender development in every thread, you could replace yourself with a bot that posts “Blender is going in a bad way and all software is awful (p.s. I hate open movies)” and absolutely nothing would change from your last few dozen posts. It’s spammy and pointless. If you don’t have anything new to say, don’t.

That aside, I’d be curious to hear from more people about using Blender for storyboarding, as that is one of the 2025 projects. Has anyone used Storypencil much? It seems quite powerful in theory, last time I used it I remember it crashing Blender fairly often. It would also be cool, I think, to have some tools to make adding text easier (I. e. for dialogue or set directions), this is a big part of storyboarding work but Blender’s text tools are a bit overcomplicated for the use. They’re great for 3D text, but a simpler, faster, 2D text tool would be great. Here’s hoping
