Blender steering, slipping and sliding

So I have it set so that when a property equals a certain number a steering actuator is activated and the object begins hunting the player. when the property switches the steering is no longer applied, but then the object continues to slide. how can I make it so the object simply stops.

have the idle do this

number == (not steering):
    own.localLinearVelocity.x *=.5
    own.localLinearVelocity.y *=.5

material frictions have always worked very well for me to prevent sliding, rather than counter forces

I use friction as well, but it’s not as instant, and you can still slide in many cases.
