It seems like someone was more satisfied with the quality of the UV mapping tools and the developers that made them, only 15 years ago:

Be thankful you have a thoughtful developer named Ideasman42 who’s willing to implement good UVmapping ideas into Blender. Thanks Ideasman. I remember a python script which can make islands then align them neatly instead of rotating them at odd angles, that could be usefull hardcoded in?
