Blender Views in Macintosh - Help!

I created a new view layout in blender (OSX) and wanted to split the view. I haven’t changed any blender settings, so I looked it up. Apparently you have to Right-click the wee bar, but nothing happens if I do. I somehow changed both views to User Preferences, and the bit where you choose what view layout disappears! What should I do?

You can try holding option and either left or right clicking. you may have to enable the “emulate 3 button mouse” option in view and controls under user preferences. Otherwise, use middle mouse click.
