Blender vs. Hollywood | Spider-Man

[UPDATE] I took all your guys’ advice, and here is the new version. I am actually happy with this one, and it’s all thanks to you
I was really close, but I knew I was missing a few things so that’s why it really helped a lot when you dears pointed them out. If there’s anything else that stands out to you, I would appreciate the advice.
All the best, I look forward to sharing the next piece!

About two weeks ago I saw “The Amazing Spider-Man 2”, and I got really excited to do another piece. This piece has a lot of meaning, at least to me. It shows a very important moment in Spider-Man’s life, and a very key element for all those who wear a mask: to protect those he loves.

Right, the title. The boldness of the topic is what really motivated me to make this piece. Primarily I wanted to see how I would do at a professional standard, but also more importantly to explore how Blender can do at a Hollywood blockbuster quality.

Please let me know what you think, and any suggestions for improvement and critique would be greatly appreciated. I know it’s not perfect, and there’s nothing more that I want than to take it even further.

My personal website: http://open3d.net for the rest of my artwork and soon to come other pieces.

Firstly, good job with what you did. The following are just my opinions, that I would help make it even better.

The black webbing on the suit is embossed (raised). Not sure if your version is, but it doesn’t seem to be. One thing from the original shot that I like is the fact that you can see the reflection in his “eyes”. There seems to be a glass/plastic dome shape over the eye texture. The border looks like it’s made of plastic. In general, I think a bit of depth would go a long way in selling the realism. I’m not sure how close you want it to the movie (maybe you wanna do your own thing), but here are some other things that a different. The suit looks like it’s made from some type of latex material, that gives a plasticy finish. There is a pattern on soles of his feet. If you don’t want to re-create your own, I’ve see at least 2 already made suit textures that you could find and use. Try searching for “amazing spider-man texture”. The sole also covers most of the underside of the foot.

Once again, just my opinions. Hopefully at least something in there helps. Good luck with the rest of it and keep up the good work.

Wow! Great work. I don’t think you could have done the material on the suit any better, but to complete the scene I would recommend that you add some debris (glass, brick, steel, whatever) to the scene, as he has just crashed through the roof of this tower. It looks like you added some sparks in the background, but they’re quite out of focus, and you don’t want to make this scene look too small.

Anyway, I think you did an excellent job bringing this to a professional level, and with a few tweaks it’ll really be awesome.

You have a nice piece of work there, though Kalessin and Owldude have some points there, if you want to create a full replica of the movie scene, you should listen to them, but if what you want is making your version of that moment, even if you could integrating some debris like Owldude said, the scene is already good enough.

Given that this is an entirely-fictional character, I suppose that what you decide to do partly depends upon whether you’re trying to exactly mimic what Hollywood did with the same shot. I rather like the “glowing dome” treatment of the eyes, and the basketball-like texture of the present suit certainly could be “it” if you wanted it to be. (Sometimes I kinda think that Hollywood goes overboard in the amount of debris they put into a shot.)

Anyhow, this shot has good exposure on the figure … not quite sure what sort of artifact seems to be going-on down there near his stomach … the sense of in-motion is good. In short, I think it’s extremely good now and that your tweaks from this point are very much to be considered “your creative choice.”

I do think that I’d like to see just a whisker more exposure … just a little bit more light … on his chest and on his neck. There seems to be just a little bit of loss-of-detail there in this print. While you do need to maintain a good, clean framing of his face to maximize the intended effect, I’d think that there should be just a little more illumination of the area directly below his chin. Also perhaps on the sole of his shoe to separate the shoe slightly from that background.

Oh yeah, one thing I didn’t notice before is that you didn’t put web shooters on his wrists. You’ll need to add those for a complete shot.

Oh darn it, I forgot. It was too blurred in the original shot for me to see it. Thanks!

I can’t thank you enough, I will use your advice like a recepie book. And I was going for copying the original shot as much as possible. I want to see how close I can get to it.

Thank you! And as for the debris, there isn’t any in the original shot (which I’m copying) because he didn’t crash through it yet. He was on top of the clocktower, then he jumped to catch a certain someone (caught in this moment of the scene), and then they crash through it.

Yes, I am trying to replicate what Hollywood did with the shot, as much as possible. That is why I don’t have much room for artistic freedom, or “creative’s choice” as you put it. And thanks for the advice, I’ll rework the lighting. It really is chaotic at the moment.

Haha, funny title since Spiderman 2 used Blender! (For Previs)

Ohhhh, I see. I though this was a shot inside the clock tower. I think for an outside shot you should have a more distinctive key light—right now it seems like the light is directly above him.

Wow! I really didn’t think of that. Now that you mention it, it can definetly be confusing that way; I’ll get on it. Thanks for the help.

Thank you all so much for all your advice! It really helped (as you can see) and now I’m happy with it! I think I’m done with it, but if you see anything else that needs improving, please let me know.

Hmm. Some improvements, but the first lighting setup brought out the juicy details of the suit better. Maybe a mix of the two would be best.
