Blender wont open new to default cube

I must have hit something in preferences, but what?

I see a recent project I was working on. I want a default cube.

in the file menu press ‘Load Factory Settings’ a thing should come up saying ‘OK? Erase All’ press on that and then hit ctrl+U (save user defaults)
