So, this has been bugging me for ages now, and I can’t imagine being the only one this is happening to (on a regular basis, no less). Every now and then - especially when having other programs open, like Photoshop or After Effects - Blender decides to crash without a warning.
It’s most likely linked to memory running out. Generally this wouldn’t be a big deal, because Blender’s auto-save works quite well. The problem is, once it happens, Blender won’t start anymore. Launching it makes the Blender window show up for a fraction of a second and close down again immediately.
One would think that closing other programs to free up memory (or even manually purging the memory in a tool like After Effects) would fix it, but nope. The only solution is to reboot your computer.
You can monitor it in the task manager.
(You can check the memory usage and whether the Blender has been shut down after a collision, and so on. You can also force the program to shut down.)
Alternatively, download the file compressed into blender.zip, decompress, and test it.
You can also check if there are any problems during the installation process.
I’m finding this same issue very frustrating. It creates a big break in my workflow, forcing me to close everything and reboot. Does anyone know of a workaround?
Stopping into add my voice of concern after researching the same issue. I’ve been dealing with this since trying to pick up Blender and it comes with no rhyme or reason making it pretty hard to troubleshoot when I can’t recreate the issue.
