After several months of work I was finally able to finish my Realistic Humanoid Rig, BlenRig.
This Project aims to make a rig based on a Bones System that is capable of achieving Realistic deformation without the need of creating any ShapeKey.
You just Skin your model with the rig and that’s it, all the secondary deformation bones do the dirty job of preventing the mesh from shrinking and getting messed up.
Well, Visit my Homepage at www.jpbouza.com.ar and get your hands on BlenRig, and its very useful manual.
Just downloaded your file. Looks pretty crazy. Will take a while to absorb. I do think it would be helpful to have the mesh in the file to see how things work… In the meantime… Thanks for sharing!
Puts my Toki rig to shame. (the anatomy is similar)
EDit: From looking at the manual, it appears that the weight painting looks like it will take the most effort. More than anything, this determines the limitations and quality of your rig. I have to respect your dedication though. 681 bones looks like something Pixar might have done.
Well, that´s the Idea, I will get some images posted in the gallery soon, and you´ll see that the dwarf just moves as well as a charater from a Pixar movie.
Anyway, not all the 600 bones are deformers, there´s a lot of auxiliary bones there, I´d say that most of them are auxiliary bones, and you won´t have to care about those guys when you skin your model.
It takes some big effort to skin a character using weight painting, but the results are worth it.
Personally, I´d prefer to correct skin shrinking with some already set extra bones than to correct it by modelling out all the different poses your character may have, and multiply that for every character you model. Thats why I developed this project.
Its up to you…
Anyway, I´m happy to have finally made my first contribution to the Blender Commumity.
Plus with the new sculpt tools, it would be way cool to just sculpt a little on the weight painted version or just plain ol’ edit to make the model your own and use that instead of skinning to the rig and re-painting.
You could do that, right? Or maybe that’s why he doesn’t want to release the rig with the model. I dunno.
Bgstratt is right…jaja, releasing the skinned model would be a great help for everyone, but that may be a little too much help…
Besides, there would be no way for me to prevent people from stealing it and making it their own.
In time we´ll see what happens. Maybe if BlenRig becomes popular I´ll make a mesh release some day. It would be great.
Well it never hurts to ask.
But worse case scenario :
someone “steals” the rigged model
Who are they going to sell it to?
Most blender users (like me) either don’t have money to spend on software / models etc, or we’re too cheap to pay for them
Or they suddenly find a magic market and sell 1,000,000 of the rigged models and retire to the Bahamas
On the other hand :
Best case scenario :
I create a phenomenal animation with your model, giving you credit of course, and Pixar then hires you as a rigger
… both of these extremes are highly unlikely
Mike
Heheh, there’s a lot of funny posts today around here…
Well Mike_S, just for now let’s say that I want you to suffer the same way I did and weight paint your own models yourselves!!
By the way, my site seems to be down, don’t know why…
I don’t think it’s because of the bandwith…Could the Blender Community have downloaded 30 GB of BlenRig??? I don’t think so…It’d be nice, but I don’t think so.
If the site doesn’ t go online by tomorrow I’ll upload BlenRig to some other file hosting system.
Ok, I just checked it out and read the manual, and I got to say I am mighty impressed. Though for a beginner like me it is indeed overwhelming For now I’ll stick to skinny guy rig until I am comfortable with the demands lol. As for a mesh sample, I don’t really see the need for it, as you’ve included a detailed manual on how everything works, even weight paints! This is a excellent reference nonetheless. Good job!
