bloom effects (and general ways of making BGE as good as UDK graphicswise)

anyone know how to bodge a real time boom effect in GE?
I’m not actually needing it at the moment so no rush, but the bloom effects were one of the things that UDK has over BGE graphicswise, that and perhaps the sophisticated realtime shadow maps. I do prefer blender game engine but after using UDK I couldn’t deny that the graphics were pretty phenomenal
