Bloom+Transparency 2026?

Had this issue with blender years ago and just when I found a compositing node setup where this actually worked they go and change the nodes and say this is the proper way is is supposed to be yet now I yet again spend months asking and looking for a solution only to be met with the same answers that do not work or no answers at all.

I know it’s possible I have images and animations where this worked only now they do not work in newer versions. Is there a compositing node setup that gives transparency with bloom and ISN’T saved as an .EXR?( opening an .exr in adobe does not work) So many programs have had this ability for years and years (Like my 20 year old photoshop program) yet somehow this is still a problem in blender. I don’t understand why with blender what you see is not what you get with this…people say you can’t save it as png (or a .mov) because it loses the glow and is not possible, yet .png is used for transparent bgs…and I have proff that it once worked, can someone explain this to me?

Do I have to reinstall blender 4.0+ to get this to work again???

I dont know what other ways you have tried but this works in 5.2

dude…this does not produce an image that looks like that, this also kills the glow size…, i have tried this, it removes the glow on save…of course it looks right INSIDE blender did you try saving it out???

…sigh…

this is what used to work and now no longer does, the image below has straight lazers on top of another visual in obs transparency WITH glow… it is a .mov and worked the way i intended so i know its possible…

I would really appreciate a real working answer and not regurgitated internet nonsense that doesn’t work.

Erm… I almost always render EXR and work with that in AE and/or PS.

It’s because of additive transparency, which I’m not going to elaborate, because you’re being rude, but if you search the forum for “additive transparency” you’ll learn everything you need to know

i can open it in adobe but the results look nothing like the render or the view inside of blender, weather its opened as transparency or alpha channel

how am I being rude? sorry if people don’t want to share proper information to me that is rude, gatekeeping is rude, Someone gave me an answer without proof it works, oh look it works IN blender…but then nothing…am i angry dam right this has been an issue for YEARS and this is the typical response, either oh look it works in blender or it’s not possible… also your suggestion of searching for “additive transparency” also answers nothing…

I am going to assume you ment “this is why it’s not possible” and your post is to point to why, yet i just showed an image of it working last year with a compositing node setup that worked before but not now …so …/shrugs? If i make a solid box with a glow in adobe and save it as a .png boom np transparent bg with glow as it is supposed to be but for some reason its such a problem in blender. The day they took out the “use alpha” check box from the composite node is the day this stopped working. 4.5+

Listen, folks. This man here is obviously very important, and doesn’t have time to put up with the childish chicanery of the mouthbreathing peons who inhabit this sad sack excuse of a forum! He’s got places to go, people to see, and he needed to have the solution to his problem answered YESTERDAY! If you don’t know how to address his issue with 110% certainty, then MOVE ON! Do not WASTE his precious TIME. Just come in, address him as “sir,” provide him with what he needs, and thank him for providing you with the opportunity to illustrate your sadly limited knowledge and lack of personal hygiene in his presence.

Do not make eye contact, presuming yourself to be his equal. Do not make small talk. He cares not for how your day is going. Just follow the instructions above exactly to the letter, and all will be well.

And yet another internet genius who has nothing to add or a solution to the issue, and i was the one being called rude? every forum i post about this has the same typical responses the same attitude, the same kind of trolls attempting to gaslight, i provided my work said hey this doesn’t work how to do this with the current version, i didn’t demand i didn’t call names, yes here’s three posts to my one that do not provide any kind of solid solution or answer, you put more time into writing out a post that is supposed to…insult me or something? Hold on lemme dry my tears… All these forums seem to be the same. I don’t understand the point if people only talk smack to someone who is looking for help. Maybe it’s not me that needs the help sorry for wasting the all knowing blender god’s time, guess us plebs just have to suffer.

@Renzatic I’m going to leave your post up so as not to break the conversation, but I will point out that it is not appropriate. It’s not civil or constructive

This may be ill advised, but let me take a shot.

People are right. .Png doesn’t support additive transparency. Here’s more information:

There are workarounds, like baking an alpha mask as you did before, which you can do again if you’d like. It’s a little fiddly, and if the glow is colored, it’s even harder. The easiest way to ensure the glow renders out like you’d expect is to ignore the alpha, render it over a black background, and then screen or add it into your pipeline later, you mentioned OBS, it should be more than capable of handling that kind of additive layering.

But, since you already figured out how to do it last year, then the best course of action would be to do what you did and then teach us all how you did it. There’s been several posts looking for this same information and they have all come up against the same limitation, but it sounds like you figured it all out already, so please don’t gatekeep that information. It’s rude.

Speaking of which, I think this should have been an inside question:

Like, ask yourself how what you did and how you did it might come across as rude.

Calling someone who has no obligation to help you but is doing so anyway out of the goodness of their heart a “regurgitator of internet nonsense” does seem a bit rude, IMO, as an example.

Convert the additive alpha to a pure 0-1 alpha mask.

Blender Default → With 0-1 Alpha Channel

Now I will warn that an 8bit alpha channel is horrible for things like glows, the banding is extremely visible. So if you’re doing this for something high-quality, use should use at least 16bit PNG.

What just happened to my images, why did they suddenly get a green background? :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

EDIT: is this a Discourse bug? Why is it adding a green background to the image elements in the slider?

Beats me, can you track down where that style is being applied? What’s the class or tag that has that background color rule?

It’s direct style (not a CSS class or anything) on the two base <img> elements inside the slider. Does it not show as green on your side? Maybe mine’s just glitched for some reason?

Ok, so I think I figured it out. During the lazy load of images, Discourse makes the background of the images the dominantColor. Then, once the images have loaded, it removes that background color. So for some reason the script is not triggering onload with the images that are inside the slider.

can confirm it’s green here
