Bone heat weighting: failed to find solution for one or more bones

http://pasteall.org/blend/31686

I have a problem with this model with the error message in the title. The armature won’t deform the mesh. I made the hands seperately from therest of the model then joined them. Are they messing up the model or is it the subsurf modifier that i applied earier?

I tried:
recalculating normals
removing dup vertices
turning off deforms for the ik bones

What can i do to fix it?

you have horrid topology around the face. Select the mesh, go into edit mode, with NO vertices selected, press Spacebar, type in “Manifold”. Click on the “select non-manifold” option. This will show you where your problem is.

As daren said, the head is a mess, with holes and overlapping faces.
Just delete it and remake it properly.

Why did you apply the subsurf modifier ?

I just started to seriously work in blender…didn’t know.

So I goess I could usea cube for the head or i could ust redo the model?

ok so it was the head. I’ll remember not to model it that way next time heh…
