Bones and meshes?

I’ve been following a tutorial and I kind of got off on a tangent and now I have a bit of a error. When I try to weight paint the bones in my character to the mesh I either can’t weight paint or the bones don’t parent to the mesh at all. I tried making a new vertex group for each of the bones but then they wouldn’t parent to the mesh. What am I doing wrong?

Select the Mesh, Shft-select the Armature, Ctrl-P to parent them. You’ll get some choices, like Vertex Groups from Nearest Bone, or No Vertex Groups etc, decide based on what you’ve already put into the Mesh.
