Go to blendercookie.com and follow the tutorials there. Currently, Jonathan Williamson is doing an awesome human modeling tutorial and the technical support you get over there is awesome. The videos are a good length as Jonathan walks you through everything, from setting up your reference to what tools to use to create your figure.
