Box Select not selecting all vertices?

Working through the Blender 2.3 Guide I have noticed that when I box select (B key) all vertices within the selection box are not selected. So when working through the tutorials, I find that I have to box select and delete the vertices several times to get the same effect needed to complete the tuts.

While in front view, only the visable vertices are selected. How do I include the ones behind them?

Windows XP pro
1.67 Gz
1 Gig Ram

Click the little button with a cube in it on the right end of the 3D View menu.

Newer versions of Blender have a different default for that than older versions.
