Bray, Ireland [Updated]

[Updated]

I’m attempting to recreate in glorious blender 3d a picture that I took whilst on a short break to Dublin. We hopped onto the dart and went away from the city down to Bray and I thought that the monument atop of the point there made quite a striking picture…

This first piccy is the image I am attempting to recreate:

And here’s my current progress:

Cs & Cs please, particularly with regard to the ground / rocks in this picture. I’m having real trouble getting anything that looks even vaguely like the source image! As you can see it’s quite frankly pants at the moment :frowning:

All help will be greatly appreciated

wo… um, try making the ground in terragen. then export the bump, throw it into blender, and tweak it. if u dont have terragen, use PS and make a bump map. then go into blender. add a plane. make it really big. subdivide 3 times. add the bump texture to it. press F9. click nose untill it looks sorta good. press smooth (not set smooth) keep going till it looks cool. then tweak it vert by vert.

Well for one, It needs a better texture, bumpmapping parhaps, And Try Subsurf. Also try placing the light at a different angle, and try UV mapping the texture to give yourself more control. Yeah. I think the most major change that needs to occur would be changing the location of the lighting to how it was in real life. And the cross needs to be moved further back, but besides that it’s good.

The texture is great, but I would try subdividing the mesh a couple three times, applying a marble texture, and maybe a clouds texture to the mesh, selecting all vertices in edit mode, and hitting the noise button in the edit buttons a few times, removing the marble/clouds texture, and then possibly hitting smooth a couple of times. Then maybe subsurface it.

also, save multiple copies, and try out the subdivide fractal

Thanks for the suggestions people, I shall give them a try and update the work when I get the chance… Which will hopefully be tonight, but who knows - busy, busy, busy…

I honestly thought the 1st picture was from blender untill I scrolled down.
Need to work some more on the rock mesh and texture. Nice cross.
Te rock doesn’t look like the rock in the photo.

Heh, I wish I could make my blender version look like the original! %|

Yeah, I’m quite pleased with the cross now, need to tweak the lighting as lemmy has suggested, but the big thing is the rock face. Seriously off-key at the moment, but persevere I shall…
