breaking sound barrier !

Saw a nice pic today .

I saw that picture once in one of those quizes where you have to guess whether an image is real, or edited. Stunning picture, however, what are the chance of actually capturing that?

looks like a grabbed frame from a video.

wat does breaking sound barrier mean?

The second your vehicle (a FA-18 Hornet here) starts to go faster then 330m/s (speed of sound), it breaks the sound barrier.
Picture yourself the plane, when flying slower then 330meter/second it emits sound waves, and these waves are still going forwards compared to the plane (cuzz they are faster)(like a bullet that is fired at you when driving your car, it will go past you cuzz its faster). When going faster then 330m/s you catch up with your own sound waves and “break the sound barrier”. (the bullet stays behind you)If a plane does that when your around you will actually hear a big BANG (from the sound waves you are compressing due to the speed)!
(you could also just google this, it’s kinda basic, look from sonic boom)

here is a little scheme and extra info

May I ask if there is any signifigances to breaking the sound barrier? Or was it just some goal to reach when making an object go really fast?

every time an object past the sound barrier the force on it is multiplied by 4
so like if something goes 3x the speed o’ sound then the force on it will be 12x more than normal:eek:

And you forgot one thing, Jeep, it makes this picture REALLY cool…

Ok Ok let me set some things straight here (I’m an aerospace engineer). That “cloud” actually a called a compression cloud among other names, is actually a phenomena that occurs when air is compressed at certain pressures, humidites, altitudes, etc etc… I have seen some Cessnas “braking the sound barrier” that cloud showed up at the tip it the prop and or the leading edge of the wings. Basically what I am trying to say here is that the cloud is NOT and indicator that the airplane has broken thought the barrier it just means that it is real close… or not, recall the Cessna. I have also seen the clouds on B-2 Bombers, and B-52 Superfortresses, and they are certainly NOT breaking the barrier anytime soon.

As for why the heck would we want to brak the barrier? Air Superiority period, we want to get there faster and quietly… sor of. If an airplane or missile for that matter is travelling beyond mach 1 (speed of sound about 330 meters per second) and it is directly above you it is silent… As soon as the shockwave that follows the airplane you hear a HUGE boom, aka sonic boom.

Look at this illustration:

Nice work of art huh?
Ok, when the airplane is directly above you, you can’t hear it since the sound wave (the angle lines), have not reached you yet once they do, then you can hear it, but the plane has passed you by the time you can hear it. cool huh?

The whole hearin it after it passes happens with any plane depending on how high its flying. I read somewhere you don’t just hear a bang, but it continuously makes the sonic boom sound as long as its over the “sound barrier”. There is this plane that I think boeing or something is making thats a supersonic airliner that makes like 1/100 of the noise of a concorde because it is so aeordynamic  <-that was random

Why would we want to break the sound barrier?
Apart from the practical reasons given by Cad2Blender, it was also considered a technical achievement a few decades ago. First man (freaking Americans  ) broke the sound barrier, then the Russians went to space, then the Americans landed a man on the moon. Next we want to land a man on Mars and then travel faster than light.
Quite cool actually.

actually no one can travel faster than light cuz the blood will be pressured to the back side of the body and then the heart will stop beating

Ahem, if you accelerate from 0 to 100mph (or decelerate) in a split second you will also die from a ruptured aorta and other things you describe… The secret it to accelerate slowly (or apply backpressure) so you can travel faster then light, just take your time (I think the max you can take is about 10G so thats 98m/s² so you would need about 355days at 10G to reach the speed of light)…
Once the acceleration stops you body doesn’t even feel the speed so kinda odd statement you put there GE-FORCE

if there was going to be any thing humans use it for transportation in the speed of light it would be a space ship , and the gravity in the space changes in every planet you pass by which means that the physics we are learning cant be used out side our solar system …in the physics of earth …when you fill a jar 2/5 percent with water and if you move it fast towards the front side ((doesn’t matter the acceleration)) the same will happen

moving it fast –>there has been an acceleration and therefor it will splash. Do this in space and the same will happen. Action is Reaction and mass equals impotence. If you would take time to get your jar to high speed with low acceleration, nothing will ever happen. Be it on earth or in space. Only difference is that in space there will be no gravitational pull towards the bottom of the jar so the splashes get higher.

Ever tried transporting an aquarium in the car, the secret for not getting wet is don’t brake or accelerate to fast…

I was under the impression you couldn’t travel faster than light was because light has no mass (which allows it to travel so fast) where as uh. Everything else does.

like a bullet that is fired at you when driving your car, it will go past you cuzz its faster

really , can you bring wiki page or something about it . please

But if you reach c, in theory, your mass is infinite, and the distances are null, no ?

I was also told that the picture is not showing the plane breaking the sound for certain …

Past as in if it’s directed at you you will still get shot, if directed parallel to your movement you will see it go past you. What is there to wiki about that?

(((just an error i didnt post it twice i just refreshed the page)))
