'Build' effect and dupliverts...

I’m trying to get an animation that builds up a scene ‘block-by-block’. I have a ‘final’ scene (i.e. the last frame of the animation) set up using dupliverts over a deformed plane mesh. So, what I thought I’d do is simply apply the ‘build’ effect on the plane, and hey presto! my dupliverted objects would appear one by one…

… except that they don’t :frowning: When I preview (Alt-A) the animation, the plane builds as I might expect, but the dupliverted objects remain in their ‘final-frame’ positions.

So, my question: Am I doing something wrong (missing a step or setting for example), or is there a proper way of doing this? It seems so close, yet…

Ok… so, I can pretty much get what I want if I use the particle effect… although judging the rate that the dupli-objects appear is a little difficult. Still, it’s something for me to be getting on with…
