Building a (Budget) PC for Linux in 2022/2023?

  • doesn’t need a gpu so I can save money now and buy a gpu later if/when I start rendering more.

It can be done (depending on needs)

I recently replaced my 14 yr old dual core with a (tight) budget Ryzen APU build. I wanted to do this because I’m aching to get a start on Blender 3, my old hardware couldn’t go beyond 2.79, 2.8+ just wouldn’t run.

So far it’s working fine for me without a discreet GPU though I’m careful not to push the video memory. I guess my needs are pretty modest and not similar to what you’re doing but I have just made this with it.

This is the spec-

CPU - AMD Ryzen 5 5600G
MB - MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI
RAM - Corsair Vengeance LPX 16 GB DDR4-3600
SSD - WDl Blue SN570 500GB + my old mech HDDs
PSU - Corsair TX550M
Case - canibalised from my mate’s dad’s old PC

Admittedly it’s not a powerhouse but it works for me. It’s rock solid with Blender on Xubuntu and I’m using it for 2D painting paired with my XP-Pen tablet screen, Krita has never been so responsive.

Got the motherboard when it was really cheap, I’ll probably double the RAM and add more storage at some point. Eventually I’ll get an Nvidia GPU but I’m holding off until UK energy prices are less crazy, might go for a RTX 3060.

But at the moment the onboard AMD graphics are OK for me, even with Eevee.
