Now I’m thinking there should be a “Hardware” section to this forum…
This one is for the hardware guys. I know just enough but I’d feel better to get some opinions on a system I’ll be purchasing, hopefully this week. It’s a build minus the DVD player burner and nvidia card (Quadro FX 3500) as I’ll just pull these from my current, languishing, Dell P4 (3.2Ghz).
Oh, and the motherboard I had looked at is now out of stock so I’ll need to find something comparable that is Linux friendly (Ubuntu 64).
Looks like a very decent system. My only suggestions would be 1) look at a different motherboard (my last Gigabyte DS3’s northbridge burned out and overall it ran very hot) and 2) if you aren’t getting the UPS see if you can squeeze 2 more GB of RAM into your budget. Otherwise, looks like a very solid build.
Thanks, for the tip. I’ll have to do more research then. Some of the positive reviews I found from a linux site mentioned Gigabyte. Another board I saw was DFI brand but I’ve not seen any reviews that test Linux friendliness.
Well, I should get the UPS but… I eventually intend to max out at 8GB so I’ll see if I can swing 4GB more. I don’t want to end up with two 2GB sticks I can’t use anywhere.
