Building for short film

This is part of a series of threads I have posted for a live-action short film I am making. This is the outside of the base on the planet.

The wierd roof thing is a solar-panel thing. The strange vertical beams are to lift up the roof so the ships can fly out.

I will work on the terrain later.

Same scene in cycles, same textures basically. Exact same lighting. 117 samples. I don’t know what happened to the solar panels on the one side.

I switched back to the internal, and I added some more, such as the cable used to lift up the roof. I also added some basic textures.

Looks neat! I’m pretty new to Blender/everything here, but from what I’ve read, Blender Internal works well for the cool kind of cel shading you have going on. I do know that if you want to use Cycles you have to change the way the textures are set up because they work differently. Image textures aren’t put on in the texture tab when you’re using Cycles, there’s a pretty different way of setting them up inside it:

(second time I’ve linked to this particular video but it was really helpful to me)

Unless you already knew all that and were just throwing it in Cycles for a second, in which case sorry. It looks cool in any case. As far as suggestions go, this is pretty minor but it seems to me the beams should be more centered (as in between the solar panels and the edge of the roof) just from a physical standpoint, wouldn’t they have more stability that way?

Yeah, I am pretty familiar with cycles, and I just spent two minutes quickly changing the materials, just for fun. I am comfortable with the internal renderer, so i think I will stick to that. I may use cycles for a corridor scene that I am also working on- I don’t know why, but it looks a whole lot better in cycles for that one (I haven’t posted a thread for that corridor yet.), but it just takes so long to render with the CPU- my GPU is not supported.

Regarding the beams- you cannot see it from here, but They are placed there because of the way the walls are constructed, and it is not a “real roof”, it is just a place to put solar panels and look cool.

Ah okay, sorry

Sorry if I came across as mad, I am not always aware of how my emotions seem to be in my writing, I appreciate your feedback.

No – I didn’t think that at all. I just felt silly having posted all that stuff about Cycles. It was considerate of you to apologize though

I just added ambient occlusion, changed the cables to be curves, and played with the textures. I still need to UV map the extra building to the left.

I finally got a little time to work on this despite school. I just added in a landscape, some mist, and animated the shuttle flying out.

Here is a still

I turned off ambient occlusion, but i will turn it back on when I render it for real.
I will work on the floor inside a little too.

Okay, I actually left out the smoke in this render, but I did add a little flare on the thrusters. I also played with the windows and the floor.
