Built a Game App?

Anyone here have experience building a simple game app?

I want to build one. Nothing near complex. I need some 3D modeling with some basic animation. Super simple stuff. Tap on a moving object … it reacts. Tap on another moving object … it reacts. And repeat … etcetera.

I’ve looked into vibe coding, reskin an app template, buying an existing app, hiring a dev on Upwork etc., etcetera.

I’m now more confused then ever … sigh. So I thought this community has had some experience in building a game application from either side of the equation.

…

Hope this place is OK to drop this query.

Hi there,
I have some very basic experience with Godot and UPBGE, although never really got round to doing anything.

Personally for a beginner I think UPBGE is better, especially as it is the familiar Blender UI.

The programming in UPBGE isn’t too bad and is really quite straightforward.

Well.. in Godot’s docu page

..the do split this a bit and “I’ve never made a game before,
I want to make a game.” might be you favorit choice to learn somethign about “making a game”..

..obviously this..

..is a joke.. but you can already see:

  • there seems to some templates
  • there will be code anyway…
  • even “coding” with nodes needs some general understanding of doing procedures or even algorithms

So when you think about how long it took you to learn blender.. maybe you already tried some rigging or simulation or geometry nodes.. then building something complex like a game needs even more time to learn (and we are not talking about “to master” this :face_with_tongue: ).

Which does not mean that this is undoable at all.

I would recommend Godot for sure. What you’re describing could be done in just a couple hours in Godot, which is great for small non-complex games

I’ve made quite a few at this point. (and am currently in a game jam) I use Unity, it’s really easy to work in, what you’ve described would be pretty quick. Just reading input, raycasting to the object in question, triggering its react animation.

Dunno whether my answer would be helpful or not, but one of my friends has been working as a Unity game developer for quite a long time (circa 15 years or so), having created a lot of interesting games and gained himself a huge experience. From what little I know, some of his game models (assets) were made in Blender and then imported right into Unity. The only thing is: you need to know C# and OOP (object-oriented programming) in order to make games/apps in this engine.

Hope that helps.

I use Unity at work and home, and Godot at home, I would recommend Godot for something simple. I prefer Unity over all but for this use case you don’t need the complexity

Thank you everyone for your amazing responses!! I’ll give Godot a shot then look into UPBGE and Unity. Then give up and hire someone, ha! Exciting stuff!!

Sorry I didn’t reply sooner … getting struck by lightning again whilst on a laptop is something I seriously try to avoid, so I go offline until the lightning storm(s) pass by.

A large maple tree on my property, not more than 15 feet from my house, was struck by a massive lightning bolt. Insanely bright!
The lightning bolt’s energy traveled down the tree, through the ground including my house’s electrical system.

I was typing on my laptop at that exact moment!

The finger tips and palms of both hands got a crazy shock. My elbows too, they were wresting on a large metal table that I was working which has metal legs. The floor of the shop is a bare concrete pad.
Fortunately the office chair I was sitting in had plastic caster wheels and wasn’t grounded. So the lightning bolt’s energy went through the laptop, through my hands and elbows then down through the grounded metal table!!

Completely frying the poor laptop.

So now even when I hear the slightest rumble of thunder that seems far off, I stop working on my laptop and desktop too, unplug them completely!!
