Bullet Physics Contest: Most Incredible Device wins a PS3 / Wii

As a follow up to the PSP Contest, there will be a PS3/Wii Contest. Deadline: 1st March, before GDC 2007:

The goal is to build a cool ‘Rube Goldberg’ / ‘Incredible Machines’ demo, using Bullet. This time, you can use Blender with Bullet, but also OgreBullet, C4Bullet, IrlightBullet etc, but that requires programming, so I recommend BlenderBullet. Animations of such device by baking Bullet simulation into IPO’s is allowed too!

Incredible Machine:

“Rube Goldberg” who came up with the idea of making very
complicated inventions to do simple things

See here for his original comics: http://www.rube-goldberg.com/
Also here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rube_Goldberg

For more recent examples try this search on youtube…there are over 400
videos of various machines, some built in game engines but most are
real-life contraptions.

This video shows a bunch of particularly good ones.

This kind of demo would require a number of simple objects like
dominoes, pendulums, wheeled carts, staircases and other stuff that
could be assembled into complex gadgets.

More info follows. Good Luck!
Erwin

I’ll do it… mabye this time i can actually finish it.

and good luck for everyone in the contest and thanks erwin for the nice physics engine and the good contest prizes.

omgosh I want to sell that PS3 so bad and make a $1000!!!

Wow, im definately going to enter in this one. Does the simulation have to work in 2.43?

Oooh great contest idea and great prizes, im definatly going to try and enter this one, haven’t had a good excuse to do any personal work in blender for a while so this is a good incentive.

Nice one Erwin!

doh! I just started on the game engine in blender. Been doing blender for a while, but i doubt i´m gonna make this one… But it´l be interesting to see what others do.

btw, is there a good/at all a tutorial on how to use armetures and making the objects cast shadow(s)?

-thondal-

i’m keen… good excuse to put some work into a project… using the latest build of blender I assume?

Can i be in, or is it for people who are experienced in Blender Artist?
i had the idea to do this once, in fact i started a thread about it. and i have that incredible machines game, frikkin’ awesome game.

cool ! Don’t know if I’ll have the time to participate, but it’s deffinitely a good idea !
for the story : In nov 2006 I participated in a workshop with Julian Oliver (Fijuu and blender osc guy…) and we made an exercise with just that, except we used ipo to simulate physics in the GE (it was to practice IPO)… this leaded to funny animations .

Wow, I like the idea of playing with physics and possibly getting a PS3.

I don’t think I’ll participate, as I’m not that interested in the PS3.

I mean since you already have the PS3 and the Wii in there.

Well anyway;

I don’t think I’m creative enough to make something that “stands out” out of a Rube Goldberg machine.

Nice promo for bullet though.

I’m absolutely in, despite the incredibly small odds I’ll win; I prefer to focus more on having a good time in a game/contest rather than sacrificing everything to win, it makes things much more enjoyable -the means justify the end.

With that said, I really, REALLY want a ps3…

Im definately in on this one:)

Wow…That was really deep…nah not really, i really wanna ps3 too,not a Wii because its my Birthday on the 14th and i only need 50 more $ to get one.

If you have ideas, screenshot, just reply on this topic. The recent ‘mousetrap’ demo by fobsta is a good exampe of a ‘Rube Goldberg’ machine.

Erwin

If I had powers this would be a sticky.

I’m new to everything that’s new in the game engine. Are there any particular features our goldberg machine should try to showcase?

^what he said

oh and should it be interactive or just a physics demo that goes by itself

Maybe the Half Life 2 videos are a good indication of where to start:

Count me in on this one a chance to get a wii for free PLUS learn more about the game engne OH YEAH cant beat that
I do have a few questions here before i dive in to this?
Can you use the NEW (blender 2.43 RC) or does it have to be the current Offical release 2.42a?

and can this be like REALTIME in the game engine?
