Bump and Normal maps Problem

Hi there.
I’ve been picking up blender for some time now, reading through some tutorials around the net. However, I’m stuck with a certain Texture Mapping known as the Bump and Normal Maps. Its sort of a memory efficent solution to Take details from high poly meshes and place it onto low poly meshes.

But what I like to know how to apply this feature and what would this be best used for.

Can someone explaining to me how to? Thanks.

(EDIT)Whoops, i’ve placed this thread in the wrong topic…

I created an aircraft sort of thing once and used a bump map to make indentations appear where individual panels come together to form the aircraft, the seams. I just edited the uv layout, creating black lines where I wanted the seams to be, and turned everything else white.

Another example is to copy hi poly sculpted details appear in a low poly mesh. Here’s one tutorial on it: http://blenderartists.org/forum/showthread.php?t=138194

And there was a video recently at blendercookie.com about the subject that explains normal maps good.
