Bump mapping..

So, I read in an old post which said that bump mapping only only takes effect when choosing either image texture, stucci or noise and after some testing I found this to be true, although wood kinda had an interesting result. My question is why?

There was some effect on the other textures too, but it sure as hell wasn’t bump mapping. Note that since I’ve used Blender for a little while now so I probably should know this, But I don’t, so :Z… tell me

Thanks

Neither do I after 16 months of continual use…
Any texture can be used for bump mapping, some act weakly that all. Push up contrast in the Colors tab of the texture buttons and Nor in the ‘Map to’ tab of the material buttons to begin to see some real effect.

What you can do too is take your image texture, put it into a paint program and make it black and white and up the contrast and save that as another texture. Then put that on a layer below the real texture and bump it like mad. This is in case the real texture isn’t contrasty enough.
