Bump Node vs. Displacement Node (Bump Only)?

I’ve baked the Noise texture and rendered the scene out in Octane.

But this isn’t necessarily a comparison between Cycles and Octane. It’s more about the differences between the different versions in Cycles and why the sometimes break.

And here’s a version where I used a rock image texture instead of the noise texture to avoid the baking part.

What happens when a Normal map is routed to the Displacement Node with the Bump Only setting?

I think this one might cause some or maybe all of what is being discussed here? Not sure
