Butterfly Closeup - DONE?

Hey guys, I’m not posting this in the WIP section because it’s basically done. I just need to make a spec map and tweak the normal map for the rocks, otherwise it’s done. Please tell me what you think and what can be improved. It’s a wallpaper for a friend, but I needed the modeling experience.
I seem to be losing my judgement ability when it comes to realistic DoF - do you think its ok as it is? or is it too heavy?

Ok here’s some alternate (better IMO) lighting. I also seemed to have forgotten the leg textures in the previous one. Plus I remapped the rocks with a spec.

And incase the DoF is too much to see some detail you want to see, here’s the non-DoFed render :stuck_out_tongue:

hmm, i noticed some messed up DoF… so dont crit on that (particularly the right-most leg and the edges of the wings)

I suck at modeling…fluid sims being my domain but I think that this is amazing. Now you should wait for the critiques of more experienced people

i like how the DOF gives it a sense of scale, however, it may be a bit too much. Also, the wings seem a little too saturated, because right now, it just stands out too much. Reduce the saturation of the texture a little.

Also, the eye looks too regular, as in, it looks like you just added a sphere and placed it as an eye. Maybe scale it down and stretch it so it seems embedded in its head. You can see in the photos how its not an exact sphere, but stretched on the z-axis.

Model the proboscis and antennae also, as it will add to the realism of the image.

Overall, the composition looks great in my opinion, however, a few things mentioned above need a little touching up.

Hey looks pretty good. I think the DOF is a bit strong, but I don’t think you should do away with it altogether. I liked the rocks in the first one. They appeared to be more mossy, not so hard.

The rocks were intended to be mossy in the beginning, but one of my friends told me it looks like gold. And I think it does now, so I’m going with that

I think it’s looking better now… anything else?
Do you think the eyes are now too small?

yeh, the eyes are too small now

ok, heres an update:

THIS ONE IS THE FINAL IMAGE (WALLPAPER)

Take a look from a different angle (but this isn’t the wallpaper):

Heres a close-up on the eye… you cant see it so well in the others.

very nice, however the image looks too blown out(too white) and the wings texture is still too saturated with colour

I see what you’re saying, but I definitly like the overbright feel to it… and the saturation of the wings… but do you think it’s ruining it? really really ruining it?

Have you used the same texture for both sides of the wings? The underside of a butterfly’s wings are usually fairly colorless

yep, see here:

I’d like to know how you did the eye close up.

Moved the camera closer, doy?

Really nice job on the more recent renders. The antennae I think needs to be bigger, so it’s more visible when not zoomed in closely and I’m thinking monarch butterflies have a black body dotted with white spots, not brown with black outlined white spots.

Still, it’s a great job!
Can’t wait to see more!

Uh… yeah… just moved the camera. (If you wanted to know how I made the eye, I just found a hex pattern from google, edited it so it’s tile-able and shoved it on the eye to effect the normal instead of the colour)

I’m getting tired of this one, I’ve currently got a lot to do and in my opinion it’s done. I know its not that great with all its incorrect colours and small antennae, but I’m very busy right now - so maybe in a few days when I don’t feel like doing homework, I’ll touch it up.

Thanks for all the crits guys!
