I don’t know a whole lot about computers, so please help me out if I am doing something horribly wrong or getting a bad deal.

Thanks!
Jonathan

Check this out… Free WaterCooler…
(Its not the new Vishera Chip… but the water cooler is free) pretty good deal…

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819106011

Power supply looks low. I’d go with 700 W minimum

the Nvidia 650 isnt that great for Cycles and like daren said the 500watt is kinda low…

The Nvidia GTX650 is about as fast as my AMD FX8120 CPU @3.6GHZ

With that CPU posted above with watercooler 8150 you could easily get 4.0-.4.4GHZ

Or better yet, get the Vishera 8320 or 8350 and OC it
(wish they had the free watercooler deal with it…)

you could buy a Vishera 8350 or 8320 and the one with the free watercooler and then sell the un-used 8150 on ebay
(just take out the Watercooler and sell the CPU,
Make sure you post on ebay that its CPU only… etc…)

Thanks guys, I’m glad you can help me out with this BEFORE I purchase. It would be a PITA to find something not quite right afterwords.
So up the power supply to 700 watt, but which Nvidia card is good for cycles (that’s not too expensive)?
Thanks again,
Jonathan

To the people who are recommending bigger PSUs: Why?
700W is absolute overkill, at least on that system. Unless you are putting in multiple GPUs, a good 500W supply will be enough for most CPU/GPU combinations. If anything, I’d go for a proper-brand PSU, because who knows what kind of junk they sell as “-Standard-”.
As for the GPU: Just look at the benchmarks to see what kind of performance to expect.

As much as I like diversity and competition, AMD has no real alternative to a Ci7, if you can afford it, top up to get the -K and overclock it.

The 8150 is a nice-try CPU, but it consumes more power than the Ci7, is at many tasks on par with the Intel, but also at a lot of them considerable slower, ranging from 15-75% speed difference.
Not much better for the 8350, which is also slightly slower than the 3770. It too consumes a lot of power.
And if you OC it, it gets faster and consumes even more, and you can OC an Intel as well.

And it’s not just gaming, where the CPUs are pretty much on par, but for stuff like Cinebench, where @reference clocks, the Intel wins all the time, but marginal… talking about 6.9 vs. 7.2 scores… somthing like that. May be marginal if you render one still for 1h, but will attribute if you run rendering an animation for a few days and can scrap of a day per CPU because its faster. Depends on what you’re after.

Unless somethings specifically compiled for the AMD, or some single tasks, the Intel is always better.
There’s a reason why AMD want’s to stop producing regular CPUs and focus on the server segment.

But do your research, there are plenty of articles on this topic in the internet.

The only thing that attributes for AMD is if you choose not to spend much money on hardware, or don’t need the top performance and rather have a good price to performance ratio.

As for the PSU:
In my C2Q-9550 System I got 2 graphic cards, 8 drives and 9 120mm fans along with a small city of USB devices and it runs with a 750W PSU without toubles even under full load, and it’s not really a powersaver system and heavily OC’d.
With the 600W PSU it had before it was shaky on it’s legs

Also consider, that efficient PSUs have their peak efficiency at peak loads.
If you buy a 90%+ 1kW PSU it means it has the least loss running close to the 1kW.
If your system only uses 350W, the efficiency can drop down to abyssimal numbers, and you literally make hot air from money.

And i am with Zal, better get a quality PSU. If your cheapass PSU frys and kills the mainboard and 2 HDDs for examply in the progress, the joy is limited. Although a PSU is just a box of power, the more you pay, the better the components inside usually are. There are only a few manufacturers though for the guts of PSUs, so if you do research there, you’re often able to get the same guts, one time in a dull gray box for 50 bucks, and one time in a stylish black box, with light and sound for 200 bucks

And here’s what you can approximately expect from a GTX650:
http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu.php?gpu=GeForce+GTX+650&id=2155

Personally I’d try to get a used GTX570 in the bay, or a GTX470, which you’ll get for around 100 Euro easily and is still faster than the 650. Maybe not as modern, not that energy efficient and less memory… but faster for GPU rendering and gaming.

Thanks for that information, it really does help. I’ll probably go with the 660Ti - not #1, but it is almost the same price as the 650 so it should be worth the extra cash. Also I will go with a 600w power supply, if I only have 1 card that should be plenty.

here is a killer combo deal if you want to build your own… its a start…

this is Intel(not AMD like the CPU Above)
http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboDealDetails.aspx?ItemList=Combo.1128660

Even come with free 2x4GB of RAM  same stuff i have…
(just pick up an extra pack for 16GB total)
G.Skill RipJaws 1600
(i have seen Intel reviews Sandy and Ivy and Intel doesn’t scale that much with higher memory speeds, 1600 is fine)

Haha, thanks but too late: I just placed my order. Thanks guys for helping me out by avoiding a not so good graphics card. I’m pretty excited :stuck_out_tongue:
