Wow it’s been sooo long since the last time I posted there. For some reason, I wasn’t able to finish any personal projects but this one is an exception. I’m so glad I could finally finish this one.
I used to hike into “calanques” near Marseille when I was a kid. I still go there from time to time and I’m deeply in love with all these shades of green, deep blue and white. Putting this together was all the more tough as I know the feeling of these places very well, trust me, there are (too) many abandoned .blend files around this topic and I’ve been trying to capture this feeling for many years now.
wow! Really Nice!!
I’ve never been on French seaside but Croatian and your image recall me those nice places.
Just a minor thing: precisely I don’t know what but there is something that gives me a bit of CGI feeling… I don’t know if is the monochromatic color of the rocks, low variations on vegetation or something else… anyway, it’s a really well done image and it works really well…so probably it’s just me.
I think that another shot(s) it deserves as your great work you did.
Yeah I see what you mean by this CGI feeling, I get it too. I think the pine needles shader is still a bit off, it is super hard to get a good translucency throughout a pine tree. I could also add more variations on the ground: usually there is a lot of redish tones under the pines due to dead needles and leaves. I didn’t do that so the trees are actually growing on a super clean rock floor that can bring this cgi feeling.
As I’m in the game industry now I changed my approach to work with a few assets, maybe I’ll find a mix in the end haha.
The water normal texture and peoplo can be improved too.
I’m planning to make other shots on this subject so it will be the opportunity to improve that
En-Vau ! I could recognize the calanque shape with my eyes closed. Beautiful rendition ! just came back from holiday in Marseille and your picture gives me a surge of nostalgia. Did you kitbash the rocks ? I’m looking at the place on Google Earth now and the resolution is miserable -I initially assumed you might have started from elevation data but now it seems unlikely. The pines are pretty convincing. Needles look a little too big perhaps, as if they were leaves.
Hey! Tank you so much for your message!
Yes En-Vau was my main inspiration although Sugiton and Port Pin are great one too!
Yes I kitbashed the rocks. I started to work in the game industry so I changed my creation habit : I did a set of rocks from quixel with a modified shader for colour coherence and instances them with LODs on a single point object that I marked as an asset.
As the asset browser is not making instances by default, I preferred doing the instance system this way.
I’m still not completely happy about the rock shapes and frequencies, I think I’ll end up doing them by hand for future projects like this one.
Yes the pines are really cool, maybe you’re right on the needles size, it’s hard to find the balance with a heavy scene like this. I’d love to improve the needles shader too, it still seems a bit off to my eyes.
