Call of the Cthulhu - Large Images - WIP Texturing

Another hurricane inspired blend…

In this one, I want to depict the fear and sheer enormity of “cthulhu”.

The model was developed using my favoriate tools (extrude, scale, rotate), plus a health dose of subsurf and smoothing.

The intrepid explorer was generated with makehuman (Thanks Makehuman team!), and the torch idea came from sysadm’s site (www.centralsource.com).

The reason this is in WIP and not Final, is I am still trying to determine the right texture combination for cthulhu, some of the renditions are too rough, some are too slimy. I’m open to suggestions.

Crits? Suggestions?

the last one looks like a comics picture!
lots of style thought…looks like a good cd cover for a metal band!

Thanks, that’s the beauty of the new “toon” shader.

I might add some edge lines in the toon render… who knows.

I’m more focused on getting the textures right in the second scene, something more realistic…

Well, as realistic as an imaginary 1,000ft tall octopus headed demon monster can be…

That little man in the picture gives a pretty good since of scale there. Man that thing is huge, :o :o :o

Thanks Kansas, the idea was to show the sheer overwhelming nature of the beast as per H.P. Lovecraft’s stories.

I’m glad you think I’ve captured it.

I’m really closing in on the final render, should end up in Final Projects this week.

“Ia! Ia! Cthulhu Fhtagn!”

hehe did you see any of my earlier Cthulhu posts?
I tried to model the whole thing, but as the idol.

I like the second render best. The toon-render didn’t come too good.
Also, the tentacles are too square. They were extruded squares, yes? hmm…

Cthulhu’s an interesting subject to model.
I’ve also thought of doing Nyarlathotep’s Howler avatar. Haven’t gotten around to it yet… maybe tonight?

Yes, in fact it was your model that inspired me.

I agree the tentacles ended up a little square, perhaps this evening I will have time to adjust them.

I personally believe that the Cthulhu Mythos provides an exceptional source of organic modeling challenges.

Oh yes…

“Think Fhtagn”

PS - I’ll post here with a link to the final, I’m expecting it by early this week.

And have you seen mine?

Hmm, you couldn’t have, I had to remove the file, but here it is:

This was the last one, rather unconventional, but o well.

whoa… hey I saw that dude last week. Looked just like your render. Then I pulled out my claymore and fought the octopus dude for 3 days and finally won by biting one of his tentacles. Yeah… anyone want sushi?
