This took me some time to figure out so I though I would
post this for any other new users that run into it.
I was going through the gingerbread man tutorial in the
Blender user manaual and could not get the camera to
track my object correctly. The camera’s Y axis always
points to the object. To fix;
Go into Object mode and select the camera
Display object buttons (F7)
Under Constrants/Track to
You want the minus Z axis to point to the object (last dash -)
You want the Y axis to point up
Also you can delete the track constrant here (x). It does no
work with ALT-T
Pretty simple, but to add to what khkachn said. In the manual, it also states that in order to have the camera track say the gingerbread man just use ctrl-t. However if that does not work, that means that there is rotation stored in the camera. Not sure if my terminology of this is phrased correctly. But anyways, to clear the rotation, use alt-r and that should clear the rotation. Select the camera and shift select the mesh and use ctrl-t to track. That should do the trick. Remember to use old track though.
