Can I apply Subsurf Modifier to only select vertices?

Hi, I want to apply a “Subsurf Modifier” to only a select few vertices (the top face of a cube) or can I only apply “Subsurf Modifier” to the whole mesh.

as far as i know, you can’t. modifiers in general are applied to the whole object. some allow you to apply the effect on weight painted vertices, but the subsurf modifier isn’t one of them.

you’d have to either subdivide the top face only or separate it from the rest of the mesh and apply the modifier to it.

No but you can manually subdivide only faces you want by selecting them, pressing W and then choosing “Subdivide Smooth” if I’m not mistaken.

Ok, didn’t think so. Maybe I’ll try weight painting it and see if that works. Thanks dyf.

You can ONLY apply it to the whole object, weight painting etc has zero effect. The whole object or nothing

Hi Paint Guy,

if you want tp apply the Subsurf modifier to only one face of a box or a group of vertices or whatever you can do the following. Choose your face press P to separate and then assign subsurf and then apply. Choose the two objects press ctrl+j to join and then in edit mode fill the holes that has been created. The problem is that the edges around your model will be round so is better to define these edges as sharp so the gap between the objects will be the same. Also you will have a miss match of vertices. If you don`t have any problem with the topology then I think this should work.

Hope it helps

By using subsurface modifier to only some parts of a mesh would ruin your topology aswell. if what you want is to bevel the edges, then i suggest you try the bevel modifier witch does have vertex group support.
