Does Blender paint the entire mesh when a mirror modifier is on the mesh (but I have not hit the “Apply” button)?
Or must I apply the modifier before I set up my UV mapping?

If you want all your faces to have their own unique UV space, of course you should apply the mirror modifier before unwrapping.
Ok thanks helluvamesh. I was doing some tests and the mirrored side wasn’t showing…even after the uv mapping was painted and applied. Unless I mirrored before setting the uv’s it did not work.
