Can I run a 8x AGP card on a 4x AGP motherboard? I want to get a 128MB card, but I don’t know if it’ll even run on my ASUS mother board.

it should.

i believe 2, 4, and 8x are backwards compatible. but not 1x.

you should check somewhere more authoritative.

You sure about that? I think they’re forward compatible, but not backwards (meaning you can’t put an 8x card on a 4x board, but you can use 4x on 8x boards).

EDIT: This is better answered [here](http://www.neoseeker.com/Hardware/faqs/kb/10,63.html).

I also reckon an 8x card would work in a 4x slot.

As far as I understand, most 8x cards are 4x compliant anyway. The only issue you may have with trying it, could be the AGP voltage. Most cards are 1.5V, but some were 0.8V

The only thing likely to remotely damage a video card would be the voltage.

If in doubt, don’t risk it. That’s my advice. 😉

Yes…it would be better for henrymop to just buy an 8x (or PCIe) board, for upgrade’s sake.

yep it does work, mine was a AGP 8x in a 4x slot (I’m on a different compy now (with a 2x AGP :(). It didn’t blown anything up

yeah, it just runs at 4x

[I’m doing the same]

PCI card would be your best bet, AGP are 32 bit slots while the PCI is 64 bit, the only difference is that the AGP communicate directly to the CPU.

PCI depends on the slot. There are 32 bit pci slots (can only use 32 bit cards), 64 bit pci slots (can use 32 or 64 bit cards) and PCIe slots… to many variations in PCIe will be detailing forever.

Yes you can put an AGP 8X card on an AGP 4X motherboard. However the card’s performance may be less that if it was connected in an AGP 8x motherboard.Howver you cannot connect an AGP 8X card in an AGP2X motherboard(because of volatge).

Well my PC has an AGP 4X motherboard and an AGP 8x card on it(GeForce 5200)
