Can particles have color from emitter texture in Blender Internal?

Hi,
I´m trying to emit particles from a plane with texture and have them the color of the pixel they are emitted from.
I found Info on how to doe this in cycles. But wanted to render in Internal Viewportrender.
Since I have no clue how to get started I can´t provide a blend-file.

Can anyone shed some light on my way?

What type of particles (particles or hair or object particles) ?

OK, didn’t point that out. I was looking for emitter particles. Objects are ideal for the purpose. Thanks for the file, it’s really helpfull.
