Mistakes happen?
I had similar issues in 2.78a, was resolved with 2.78b for me.

I know mistakes happen, I also tried the updated build which did not work, that’s 3 versions, I just hope someone knows if that can be fixed otherwise I can’t continue, but I still 2.49b which does work.

Hmm…can you remove the mesh that is not culled and leave only the plane fish mesh and see what will happen?
Seems to just be the viewport clipping settings. Click the little + on the right hand side of the viewport, somewhere under display (I think) should be viewport clipping settings. Set the end clip to something really high like 100000, or at least until it stops clipping.
Yeah I thought it was a clipping problem too but that was not it. The view I was using was front view, I tried locking camera and raising clipping to 100000 no luck. I also tried Haidme’s suggestion and that does not work either. Other Blender versions I tried were buggy on my system, Win 7 AMD Radeon HD 7450. Any other ideas are welcome.

i never had problemd with a HD 7850 now i got rx 470 nothing else then freezes and crashes (only blender when building the game, or alt tabbing)
anyway, i had a smilar issue before, and my dissapearing faces had to do with the option recalculate normals, any chance you used this option on/with your mesh?
my solution was, save it open a new blend and append the object into the new blend, then everything was fine again and i could save the new blend, and append that object into my game blend again.
Yeah I recalculated normals, I appended and it worked for now, this is not the first time I had this problem I fixed it by appending it into a new blend, not sure how long it will last though.
