Can someone please give me some help with stylized character creation?

I recently was asked to do this character creation job in blender, and have no idea where to start.

I have advanced knowledge of blender and know most of the ui, hotkeys, and tools. I just am a beginner at the techniques, styles, and art behind the ui, hotkeys, and tools.

I have already gathered references both from the traditional artist I am working with, and various sources on the internet. I just need to translate this concept art into 3d characters for use in games. Since the characters are meant for games, they have to have clean, lower poly count topology.

The characters are cartoony, stylized, non-human creatures.

After a few attempts of blocking the proportions out, I figured I was doing something wrong. I cannot capture the “spirit” of the original art without making it look weird.

I was wondering if someone with experience could give me some tips and pointers, go over some of the common errors a beginner generally runs into.

Thanks in advance,
Z
