'The Video Sequence Editor Reworked' - download and feedback here

Do you guys think that we together can agree on and produce python UI scripts as a working suggestion for the default settings and UI of the VSE workspace in 2.80 in the chat room?

The main goal is simply to improve the user experience(not adding new functions).

I and other people have been throwing up some balls in the air ex.:

On the default settings: devtalk.blender.org/t/suggestions-for-vse-ui-cleanup-and-default-settings-in-2-8/2210

On the VSE File Browser UI: devtalk.blender.org/t/blender-ui-paper-cuts/2596/94

On the Menus: docs.google.com/document/d/1lVPxEgR5bnMr4jV-OkLifeU4v9Qp9x-eoCOWADn8u7I

On the potential uses of the new top bar: docs.google.com/document/d/1AaniHjm7nKjiBUhHR7NgqLaDwjKqXgiYyNyZRsk9oh4/edit

And on the strip property settings(it has to be one column from now, right?): http://blender.community/c/rightclickselect/zfbbbc/sequencer-panels-update

Or the compact Strip Properties in VSEQF: github.com/snuq/VSEQF

Do you think it would be possible? Whoā€™s up for it? And would the Blender Institute be interested in us doing this work for the VSE?

Hereā€™s a download for a file for the reworking the menus as mentioned above (nb. some menus are broken) Open it in the text editor and also open properties_grease_pencil_common.py (- included in 2.80), manually in the text-editor or else youā€™ll get errors, before running the sequencer script: http://wetransfer.com/downloads/33a63921069b355bbf9671f88c7edb0220181116223139/95c3a2ff35772069b277e54faa2f8cea20181116223139/68eca7

Hereā€™s what the menus currently are looking like. Does anyone have feelings or opinions about this menu layout?

Are there any functions from existing VSE add-ons you think is vital to include in the default Blender?
(ā€˜extract/ripple deleteā€™, ā€˜select under the cursorā€™ and ā€˜select channelā€™ has been added)

Iā€™m afraid I donā€™t think I have anything useful to add at this stage but I certainly applaud an effort regarding this neglected but really important part of Blender!

The problem with the VSE is that is orphaned. The only developer remaining that know the internals/features/limitations of it is Sergey, but he have his plate full for quite some time.

Probably in the future BF can focus on the VSE and video edit in general, but i was told at the time it touches many areas of Blender and wonā€™t be exactly easy to fix all itā€™s problems/limitations/papercuts in it (probably it will require a full rewrite). For now BF is focused in making 2.8 future proof and the UI work.

Is more realistic to wait for the 2.8x series to stabilize and after that, speak to devs/BF about the VSE. As far i remeber, is not neglected because of lack of interest of BF, but lack of developers wiling to work on it.

Well, what Iā€™m doing here is integrated into the files Blender comes with, so this could be patched into Blender by a click of a button, if only it is good enough, that is. So the question remains. Look at the gif or download the files and try for yourself. Can this menu be improved for a better UX?

Are there any (small) existing functions included in the existing add-ons which you think should be part of the default Blender VSE? Which of those functions would be essential for an improved editing experience?

Hereā€™s a list of all the existing VSE add-ons: Video Sequencer Editor [Add-Ons] - List from the VSE FB group

Looks good IMHO. (although iā€™m not a heavy user of the VSE)

Two cosmetic (probably picky) things if you can change it:

  • ā€œNavigationā€ should be ā€œPlaybackā€, IMHO. (It better conveys what the menu is about).
  • Un-metaā€¦ i donā€™t knowā€¦ probably shoud better say ā€œexplode meta stripā€ or something more explicitā€¦ is not exactly obvious what it means.

Other than that, you should contact Brecht or William, seems a very good improvement over what we have now.

Thank you. Iā€™m hoping for some more navigation tools to put into that menu - therefore the name. Un-meta is Blender lingo, I suppose.

Really great progress here. Going to have a play with it. Iā€™ve used the VSE for quite a few projects, but always get frustrated with silly UX annoyances.

Keep posting the GIFs, these are great to see progress and learn the features. I wish the blender docs contained GIFs to show bits if functionality.

Good to hear you want to try it out.

I really really need testers to feedback on it asap, as my work with this project is coming to an end soon. And by testing I mean are there any bugs, errors, or unexpected behaviours, which can be described so I can repeat the process and get the same error.

As for more GIFs, follow me on twitter and look up the VSE Reworked thread on devtalk too:

This looks really good, will test it in the upcoming days, if I manage to make a new video.
I enjoy mostly the selection tools like Select + ctrl, Select +Alt, Select + Shift, the Razor tool and move in steps.
So nice to see the VSE is getting some love, it is a bit like Blender itself, if you know your shortcuts itĀ“s a powerful and fast tool to work with.

Edit: seems to work so far, IĀ“ve tried all your above gifs, good work.
Only minor difference was the Select + Shift is only working with Select + Ctrl for me.

Do you know what is the difference between soft and hard cut?

Thank you.

The select +shift/+alt/+Ctrl are built-in Blender functions, but unknown to most users(including me). For now they are added to the select - Mouse - submenu, but they mostly work as hotkeys in combination with Mouse selected and Mouse position. I hope info about these functions can be moved into the statusbar.

In the github VSE Reworked readme, can you see what functions are new. https://github.com/samytichadou/blender_vse_reworked/blob/master/README.md

A hard cut will make a freeze frame if you extend it, as if the source material is shorter than it actually is.

An improved cut/split function:

  1. If selected strip, then only split the selected strip.
  2. If no strips selected, then split all.
  3. Donā€™t split locked strips(as the default cut function does)
    split_fix

Fixed a bug which caused Split Extract/Lift to delete all selected files.

I would like the vse and blender to evolve even as a musical tracker ā€¦
place this tip here to bring to light what I mean ā€¦

here the link to sunvox is a powerful free music tracker
that as a structure is very similar to the vse and to blender imterface ā€¦
from which to take inspiration

Thanks for the attention
https://blender.community/c/rightclickselect/y1cbbc/where-is-the-music

The only audio functions supported internally in the vse are volume, pan and pitch. So if you want a DAW or a tracker in Blender, youā€™ll need to convince someone to start from scratch.

If you want to edit the audio from a VSE video project externally, there are scripts to export to Ardour, Davinci Resolve/Fairlight, Premiere, Final Cut, Lwks, Avid, Reaper and Vegas.

The only nle with a real daw included is Davinci Resolve, the rest needs to export to ex. Pro Tools for soundwork. So it is very normal to edit the video in one program and the audio in another.

Btw. this stuff is OT.
