I have a complex model that I can’t texture all at once. Too many overlaps for Projection Painting, to complexity and detail to just Unwrap and paint manually (at leadst for me, I’m new at this stuff).
I like Projection Painting, its easy and provides great detail for what I’m doing. But I’m only able to use it for part of the model. The other parts, which are seperate meshes for the same model( I built it in seperate pieces), overlap with other pieces of the model, making projection non-viable.
So what can I do? Do I unwrap each piece seperatly for texturing (preferably Projection), and if so, can I then join them all together into one piece?
Do I join them all, unwarp them, then hide the pieces I don’t want to project paint at the time…can I even do that? Basically hiding and unhiding based on what Im looking to project on at the moment…crap, I hadn’t thought of this until now.
Ok, i’ve taken the various meshses of the single model, joined them (except a few I didn’t want to projection paint) and then displaced them away from each other so I could projection paint them all with out any problems…it worked out great!
Now here is my issue, when I then join the last few meshes(that I didnt want to projection paint) to the projection painted meshes to complete the total model, the pieces that weren’t painted(the last few meshes I joined to the model at the end) show as the default white when rendered, thier textures and material colors don’t show in the render at all.
So I get wonderfully painted model, with some key pieces of the model in default white…crap!
You may ask why I don’t projection paint it all…because to get what I wanted, I had to use multiple materials on those meshes to get the desired results on some interior componenets, or to provide very percise detail I couldnt get with projection painting…or the materials did a perfect job of providing what I wanted, I didn’t want to mess it up with painting.
Hmmm, it looks like I can add the extra materials to the model after Projection painting everything. This might work.
EDIT:
Still running into road blocks. Tried to smart unwrap ecerything, but my tires and turbine fans are built using an “Array” modifier. It appears Blender can’t handle them all, the smart unwrap takes for ever and results in a lot of verticies thrown about like a dust cloud.
If I can’t find away to incorporate all the pieces in the beginning, how do I had them later without the later additions being rendered as a “white”, untextured pieces(devoid of even materias apparently)?
EDIT2:
Apparently applying multiple materials after the projection painting isn’t the answer…it doesn’t show as intended.
Hmmm, I’m not sure how the “parent” mechanic works…but i can give it a try. If you have details on how to do it, I’d appreciate it, but if not, thanks anyway.
