Can you Bake procedural textures in Cycles?

I know this question has probably been asked hundreds of times, but I can not find a definitive answer:

Is it possible to bake procedural textures? Or od they have to be “converted” to an image texture? And if they do have to be converted how is that done? If someone can point me to a good tutorial on the subject I would greatly appreciate it.
