I’m working on an animation that must involve appending individual characters from a source file as needed. However, the action called “Action” keeps getting re-appended, resulting in a bunch of empty and unnecessary actions named things like “Action.012”. Unlike materials, the actions don’t get deleted when they’re unlinked and the file is saved and opened again. So how do I get rid of these usless actions?
If they’re unlinked they should disappear. Unless they have a Fake User, and F in front. If so go to Shft-F4 and RMB-Select the chanel then you can turn fake off with F.

Uh, that’s all good in theory, but not only do they have an F in the DataBrowse in the Action Editor window, they don’t have F’s in the Shift-F4 window, and pressing F turns F on. Here’s a screenshot: 
(The .>sda was just a test.) When I select an object and press F, then the 1 changes to F 2.
Well now you’ll have to toggle the F off. Then go to the Action or NLA window, Box-select the ones you want to get rid of and hit X to delete.
In the Action window you can select the whole channel for deletion.
Then Ctrl-S, and Ctrl-O

The whole problem is that I can’t toggle the F off. It may be off in the Objects window but is permanetly on in the Action DataBrowse window.
Been away from home is why this is so late. In Shft-F4 Shft-RMB-select the actions and hit F to toggle them off.

Ok. This isn’t working. I’ll explain it another way.
Every action is attached to an unknown object. Pressing F in the ShiftF4 window attaches it to a Fake object at the same time, therefore it is now attached to 2 objects. When F is pressed again, the action is unlinked from the Fake object but not from the unknown object.
OK… I didn’t realize you couldn’t find the object. That does make the world of difference.
Set up your screen with 2 windows, one Outliner and one Action. In the Outliner select “Current Scene” and collapse it with Nimpad-Minus as far as it’ll go.
Every object with an action will now have the little Action logo next to it and if you select them on the left with the LMB and click on the action logo then the action will display in the action window and you can hit the X.

That’s the Object/ menu in the DataSelect window. Scroll to the top of the library and click on the 2 white dots then select the Action/ library.

I can’t believe it took that long to answer this apparently simple question. Now I can finally get on with the project and many others!
