I’ve been using the Grease Pencil Line Art modifier to outline my Lowpoly NPR models and sometimes edges that I don’t want or need to be contoured are outlined anyway. Is there a way to mask, remove, or customize the edges that are contoured with the line art modifier? I’ve tried layering an opacity modifier, but it doesn’t remove the edge entirely, and can only be done using vertices, which affects neighboring edges and vertices.
You can play with settings on line art grease pencil object, in Line Art modifier there is category Edge Types I think, and you can decide which edges get outline. But alternatively, if you’re done modeling and you’re not planning to animate it, you can simply apply the modifier, go into edit mode and manually delete strokes you don’t need (or in draw mode)
I’m planning to animate it, and I’ve tried changing the line settings. I’m looking for something that’s able to adapt with the line art so that the line would show up at different angles. If it’s a still, then I would bake the line art and manually erase the line, but I’m planning on making animations for a small game project I’m working on. If possible I would like to go into contour mode, set the crease high, and mask all edges that I don’t want to appear at all
Ultra manual way of doing it would be to disable every Edge Type except Edge Marks (and contour), go into mesh edit mode, select edges that you want, and from Edge Menu ‘Mark Freestyle Edges’. Its easier to mark than to remove.
You can also try Freestyle method which has 1000 times more customizability, but of course you can’t see it in viewport yet.
I’ll try that. I’m also looking to fidget with the geometry nodes of the Line Art Curve Modifier. I’ve tried freestyle before, but I find that switching from compositor and render view every five minutes is tedious. Thanks for the help!
For Freestyle, you can exclude marked edges from Line Set.
But Line Art Modifier only includes marked edges.
To make it work with GP Line Art, you need 2 modifiers.
One that creates the lines you want.
One for the edges used as a mask.
Each modifier must correspond to a different GP layer.
Then, you have set mask layer, mask for the renderer one and set its opacity to zero.
Or you have to set an Holdout material on strokes of mask layer.
Use a mask layer:
Create new GP layer called “Mask” > Enable masks on line art layer > Add “Mask” layer to list > Create new GP material > Fill + Holdout enabled, Stroke disabled > Draw shapes over unwanted lines.
You can also orient the strokes in 3D so they work properly from different angles. If that’s not enough you can animate them.
