Sometimes when I create a new object and want to give it a material property, Blender will not let me. With the object selected, I click on the materials button, but there is nothing there, just a blank screen; no “+ new” box by which you attach a material to an object. This happens in both cycle render and blender render, and also in object mode and edit mode. Sometimes a bit later that “+ new” box comes back and then I can add materials, but I don’t understand when and why the materials are not permitted to be assigned to certain objects. Can anyone explain this to me?

When it happens again, show us something
I think now it might be because the window was long length wise and, for some reason, was scrolled all the way down past all the buttons and menus. Once I started noticing the window in the edit panel wasn’t showing everything and was scrolled down to only show a blank area, I haven’t had problems.
