Can't enable Frames Duplication (DupliFrames) in Blender 2.5

Hi all,

I’m using blender 2.56. I’ve also tried in 2.54 and even in 2.49 (even though the interface was different).

I can’t manage to use dupliframes.

I’m following the “spiral staircase” beginner Tutorial from Blender.org. I’m completely new to Blender, so there’s obviously something I’m doing wrong.

I’ve Googled Dupliframes, but everything I read says to simply “click on ‘Frames’ under ‘Duplication’” and then fiddle with the settings (Start, end, On, Off…). However nothing happens for me.

Here’s what I’m doing:

I’ve created a shape, I’ve animated it so that when I move the animation cursor left or right the object follows the path I want. I’ve created 2 keyframes (one at frame 1 and one at frame 20, just to define the basic animation), then completed with linear extrapolation in the Curves view. Everything goes the way I want it.

However, the new duplicate objects (the ones that are supposed to appear thanks to dupliframe every X frames) never appear. My object remains the only object in the animation.

What am I missing? How does one enable Dupliframes for real? Must one create more keyframes to enable the DupliFrames, or something basic like this???

PS: I’ve tried both with a single object AND with an object “parented” to an empty object. None of them worked.

The dupliframes function was not working in the 2.56 version downloaded from the blender.org site. It was only reinstated in a later build. You can get up to date versions of blender from http://graphicall.org

Hmmm… Thanks, but as I mentionned I had the same issue with 2.49. I tested again yesterday (without an Empty object, though – I hope it’s not mandatory).

I’ll try the 2.56.3 build. I hope dupliframes have been implemented in this one.

With the object selected, unselect speed in the duplication panel of the Object properties and dupliframes should work OK.

I would say that it is a bug.

I’m running the latest svn version, and it seems to be ignoring the parent relationship.
If I click on ‘frame’ for the Empty object, it will duplicate it, but not for the mesh step object.

Clicking the ‘speed’ option didn’t have any effect.

It definitely works in 2.49 - I just tried it; so if you’re having an issue in 2.49, I would re-check your steps. Perhaps maybe moving your step object mesh in object versus edit mode?

I found that if you use a Path modifier, dupliframe works, but I also had an issue that I couldn’t enter a negative value in the offset parameter (It kept resetting to 0), however I could adjust the curve in the graph editor.

However, to make something like this, you would probably be better off to use an array modifier, as it will give you the same final result, and is a bit more intuitive to use.

Here’s an example blend with dupliframes. One with a cube following a curve and one with a cube position keyframed

as in wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.5/Manual/Modeling/Objects/Duplication/DupliFrames,
in 2.5 we need a path and deselect speed, different from 2.49 which is similar to snapshot in Max
