Can't get Cycles Texture to Render

I have a fish I want to texture paint. I added an image called Fish.001, unwrapped the fish, and painted Fish.001 using Texture Paint mode. When I set Viewport Shading to Texture, the fish is textured properly

However, if I switch Viweport Shading to Material, the painting disappears

The rendered image doesn’t have the painted texture, either. It just uses a light blue placeholder color I applied a while ago.

I’m sure I’m overlooking something simple and obvious to everyone but me.

How do I get the painted texture to show up in a cycles render?

Did you save the texture after you had painted it so the image texture node is picking it up

Image is saved according to UI.
I just repeated same on default cube - no problems here. Paint on unwrapped while in BI, save image, switch to cycles and choose image. However you have several materials in slots - i wonder if there might be something hiding. Different uvs? Don’t you need to use Attribute node?

Yes, I saved the image. I’m not sure where I would plug an attribute node in… Texture Coordinate node takes no input, and the Image Texture node vector image is connected to the Texture Coordinate UV output.

I will try removing those extra materials.

Extra materials are gone. I saved the file, closed Blender, reopened the file, no extra materials. No change. Texture mode still shows Fish.001 painted on the mesh, Material mode shows plain white.

The material you’re using might still not be assigned to anything, even though you removed all the others. Although blue color would suggest it is assigned.
If you’re using multiple UV maps, you could tell which one it should use by using an attribute node and writing the map name in it, and it would then connect to image texture node instead of texture coordinate

Ehrmm… All i can offer is my test file then…

If you had several unwraps and one image you would use Attribute node instead of Coords to associate given unwrap with same image file for different materials if that makes sense.

I just noticed my Image Texture node has a red header. What does this mean?

… it’s muted (M) …

…lol… I was looking at it for a while and figuring things, then just ignored.

Poor thing. :frowning: How did it get that way, and what can I do to ‘un-mute’ it? Could this be the problem with that texture not showing up in a render?

Hit that M(ute) key while node is selected and it’s unmuted again.
Good for to compare adjustments: M no influence, M again to get it working.
I just couldn’t imagine it being used on Texture node, lol. And subconsciousness decided to ignore the fact.

YES! That did it. Thank you.

The lighting made the yellow tail turn green, but I can fix that. And the lil dude needs a spec map, a lattice modifier and an array modifier, and he’s good to go.
