I’m trying to get pain the vertices a bone will move using weight painting. I select the bone of influence in pose mode, select the object to paint, switch to weight paint mode, paint the object, go back to pose mode, move the bone… and nothing happens. Shouldn’t the painted vertices move with the bone as I manipulate it in pose mode?
Finally figured it out. When I set the armature’s parent, I needed to pick create with empty groups. I was trying to create my own groups, using the same names as the bones for each group, but it seems like whatever link is set up is more complicated than that.
Yes, it should move. What do you see when entering weight painting mode? The mesh should be blue, the area affected by the bone will be changing colors. Blue mesh is 0% affected by the bone, red is 100% affected by the bone.
You can weight paint interactively, pose the model in a way you need to fix the weight paint, apply paint and see the changes in the mesh. Select the mesh, in the modifier properties find the armature modifier. Enter edit mode for the mesh, in the header for the armature modifier, you should see 4 icons, 2 enabled and 2 disabled by default. Now your mesh should deform in all modes, edit mode, weight paint, sculpt…
I think…

I am having similar problems.
I am following this older tutorial:
http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.4/Tutorials/Animation/BSoD/Character_Animation/Upper_body_weight_painting
The .blend file is included at the bottom of this post.
Here are the steps I am doing:
Open file
Select mesh, add modifier: Armature
Move armature to top of modifier list
select bone, ensure armature is in pose mode
select mesh, use: Ctrl-Tab to switch to Weight Paint mode
At this point, the selected bone is not hightlighted.
I weight paint, and see colors change as expected as painting occurs
When I attempt to select another bone to continue weight painting, the previous weight painting
I performed disappears
I select the mesh and use: Ctrl-Tab to switch out of weight paint mode (I have to do this in order to select a bone)
I select the same bone (or any other bone in the armature) for pose mode
I select the mesh again, and use Ctrl-Tab to switch back to weight paint mode
I attempt to weight paint and get the error: No active vertex group for weight painting, aborting
I am not sure why this is happening. Am I missing a step or two?
Thanks!
Jason

Woops; just realized the blend file did not get uploaded correctly previously. I have just uploaded it. Any help and suggestions would be most appreciated! Thanks
Looks like the tutorial I was following had a missing step: to parent the armature to the mesh. Either that or I just completely missed it. I will double check.
BTW I apologize if this is the wrong place to post. I thought my problem was along similar lines so it seemed like the right place to post the question.
Hey JasonL,
You are following the best tutorial I have ever done when learning blender. Just curious, what version of blender are you using?
BTW I apologize if this is the wrong place to post.

This is the right area to place a post about an animation or rigging problem like you are having. General practice around here is to start your own thread with a subject and questions, instead of someone else’s post.
But it’s no big deal.
Hope the tutorial is going well for you!
