Can't replay animation after render

Hi! I’ve just downloaded Blender, and I’m having trouble with the Quickstart tutorial in the Education section of the website.

Everything works like it is supposed to until I try to play back an animation that I’ve rendered. The Play button seems not to do anything when I press it.

It’s also a bit creepy that I cannot select a file type for movie output; the tutorial says to select .AVI format, but there is no such button in my version of Blender. Instead, there’s just a blank space in the buttons window.

I’ve specified the directory for the renders to the be placed in, and the rendering process seems to work without a hitch. That being said, it’s frustrating that I can’t get it to play back the animation.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS: I’m running version 2.28 on mac OS X. I’ve also tried version 2.25, but have the same problems.

All buttons needed are found under Display buttons (F10)

Under frame size settings there is a buttons which read TARGA or JPG. Press that button and while holding the mouse button choose your format. There you go.

Oh, and when rendering animations, remember to render whith ANIM button.

Hope this helps you out.

the tutorial was probably written for an older version of blender that had a seperate button for each format - they’ve (since 2.23 i think) been turned into a drop-down list

Ooh, pretty… I got it to work! Thanks for the help.

I should mention that the Play button still doesn’t do anything for me, but I was able to use to dropdown menu (which I hadn’t before seen) to have the render spit out a .avi which I could view as usual. So, I’m still not sure what’s up with the Play button.

But I’m good to go. I made a nice little gray sphere with a light that swings around it. As with all shiny things, it leaves me fascinated.

That doesn’t make any sense, cause first you’re the only one reporting such a problem and because The PLAY button works allright for me, in both Windows XP and Linux…

Since you have produced an .avi, it should play it!!!

Make sure that the .avi file is saved in the correct directory…

Blender saves the animations in a specific directory and then expects to find them in a specific directory for playback… Maybe you save the animation in a different directory/folder, than what Blender expects (allthough this would be impossible…)…

I’ll tell you what…

Change to the “user preferences” window (select the “i” icon from the window type menu…) and press the button that says “File Paths”… You’ll see a button labeled "Render:"… Left click on it and then type in the full path to where you want your animations or still images to be saved, each time (warning it must be an existing directory…)… Don’t forget to press CTRL-U to save your settings…

If that doesn’t solve the problem I don’t know what is happening… Maybe someone else could help a bit more…

I hope it helps…

Spyros.
